Dear Parents, this Sunday is Father's Day and a special day for children and grandchildren to remember the men in their lives. It is also an opportunity for dads to reflect on the importance of their role in the family. The following story was given to me by a parent in the school. As a dad who finds it difficult to balance work and family, the message of the story was a gentle reminder of the God given responsibility to influence and model a Christian life to my children. Can I borrow $25A Man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door. Son: 'Daddy, may I ask you a question?' Dad: 'Yeah sure, what it is?' replied the man. Son: 'Daddy, how much do you make an hour?' Dad: That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?' the man said angrily. Son: 'I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?' Dad: 'If you must know, I make $50 an hour?' Son: 'Oh,' the little boy replied, with his head down. 'Daddy, may I please borrow $25?' The father was furious, 'If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don't work hard everyday for such childish frivolities.' The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $25.00 and he really didn't ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door. 'Are you asleep son?' He asked. ' No daddy, I'm awake,' replied the boy. 'I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier' said the man. 'It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the $25 you asked for.' The little boy sat straight up, smiling. 'Oh, thank you daddy!' He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man saw that the boy already had money, he started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money and then looked up at his father. 'Why do you want more money if you already have some?' the father grumbled. Because I didn't have enough, but now I do, the little boy replied. 'Daddy, I have $50 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.' The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness. It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share that $50 worth of your time with someone you love. Yours in Christ, Matthew Mann Read Matthew Mann's articles in the newsletter Thumbs Up!To Donna Robinson and Ali Pieper for organising and running a successful School Athletics Day combining the Track and Field events on the same day has many benefits. With some fine tuning for 2009, all the events will hopefully be included on the day. To Michael Whiting (Snr Moloney/O'connell) who with his arm in plaster, was such a big help for the teachers at the Athletics Carnival To Corey Clarke (Snr Adams) and Eliza McNamara (Snr James) who were outstanding student leaders in organising the younger students for the track events. To Millie Robinson (Snr Tomlins), Milly Burgess (Snr Adams) and Aiden Brohm (Snr Tomlins) who took time after the Athletics Carnival to thank staff for their part in running the event. To Stephanie Mann who found money at the school fete and handed it in to the Fete Committee. To Leonie Tomlins for coordinating our 5 Tournament of the Minds teams. Leonie gave up many of her lunch times to help the teams prepare for the competitions. To Tournament of the Minds teams for the preparation and commitment (giving up lunch times) they put into their performances. They performed well last Saturday at La Trove University and were proud ambassadors of the school. To the parents who assisted the Tournament of the Minds teams last Saturday and ensured they were at the right venue on time. To Marg Brohm and Ali Pieper who coached our boys basketball team; and to John Turner who was the coach and Sharon Stewart who was the team manager of our girls basketball team. To Ali Pieper who coordinated our school's entry in the Bendigo Advertiser's Medals for Computers competition. To Leonie Tomlins who is one of two teachers driving the establishment of a Bendigo Network for Gifted and Talented. So far St Therese's is the only primary school in Bendigo that has shown an interest and commitment to developing a Gifted and Talented Education network for students in the region. Thanks to Leonie, we will have students participating in the G.A.T.E.WAYS (developing and extending children's special abilities) at Girton College. |
